Saturday was really fun. We all gathered up and walked to Grand Army Plaza for a big day. This time while we were walking up the long hill of the Loop Drive, I observed lots of activities were happening at the park. As we were approaching our usual spot, I saw many people having BBQs with their families. Another interesting thing I noticed was a walkathon that was hosted for Diabetes research. But something very interesting I saw was many people gathered for one big circle of dancing. I was wondering at first why there was music playing so loud and why people were dancing in a circle at 10am on a bit of park pavement (though on this car-free Saturday, the dance party was a great example of what a car-free park could be). I went up to one young man and asked what the event was for. He replied by saying this was an aerobics class that a diabetes community group hosted. I walked away thinking that if we Youth Advocates succeed in our campaign, we can invite their group to dance on any street, at any time; for their health and ours.
While I was walking with my fellow worker, I got many post cards signed. But I was being rushed to get to Grand Army Plaza because we had an event as well. We were serving FREE ICED TEA FOR CAR FREE PARK! This means we were serving free iced tea for the people that were supporting our idea of a car-free park. I know you have heard of us doing this before, but the people of Prospect Park want a cold drink on a hot day almost as much as they want their park to be a healthy, safe, car-free place to be. The day was going very well, because it was really hot, but it was also very fun, as people would constantly stop and have a nice conversation with us. Some people remember us from prior days in the park, that's what makes me feel good. I love the fact they often ask for our names, where they can check out our blogs, or anything that has to with Youth Advocates. Many of the supporters believe that we are doing a great job for our community and as well for ourselves; this is why I love my job.
Another great thing happened on Saturday. Robin Smith, from Streetfilms, came along to interview us individually. We were all excited to get on the camera again. Robin asked us questions about us, about the campaign, about how we feel working for this community, and why is it so important to have a car-free park. We all answered her questions well. We all interacted with many people. That day and we had over 450 postcards signed. We all did a great job doing the job we love and it was very successful day.
