Transportation Alternatives is proud to announce the arrival of our newest, youngest, and certainly smartest staff members, the Prospect Park Youth Advocates. The Prospect Park Youth Advocate Campaign represents T.A.'s first completely youth-oriented and youth-led campaign. These four Brooklyn young people will bring new energy and fresh ideas to T.A.'s 20-year-old quest to rid Prospect Park's loop drive of dangerous and polluting cars. For the rest of the summer the advocates will be organizing fun events and writing this soon-to-be award winning blog. The first entry is here.
Here are some of the activities you will see the Advocates engaged in this summer:
- Trees on Strike!
Street theater in which the trees of Prospect Park demand a car-free park and refuse to provide shade until they stop having to breathe car exhaust. - Honestly People, Stop Speeding.
Youth will be out with a speed gun to record just how fast people are driving through the park during the morning and evening rush. - Prospect Park User Appreciation Day
Advocates will set up rest stations for all park users, complete with water and snacks, free tune-ups for cyclists and foot massages for pedestrians. - Bloomberg, it's not just us--99.999% of Brooklyn also wants a Car-Free Park
The backbone of the summer campaign will be postcards signed by park-goers, piled on the front steps of City Hall, asking Mayor Bloomberg to take action. - First-ever Prospect Park anti-CAR-nival
A rally/parade and generally fun time will be held on September 18, 2008 at the loop drive in Prospect Park. Check back for more details.
You don't have to wait for one of these great events to help the Youth Advocates make Prospect Park Car-Free. Send an e-card to Mayor Bloomberg today.
